citizenM is a hotel brand known for disrupting the hospitality space with its tech-forward, guest-first approach. With locations in cities like New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Copenhagen, citizenM blends smart design, affordable luxury, and seamless technology to create a unique guest experience.
Every room comes equipped with an iPad that gives guests control over lights, temperature, entertainment, and more. The goal is simple: let people personalize their stay in an intuitive and delightful way.

To support this vision, I was brought in to improve the in-room iPad experience. The focus was on making the interface more seamless, modern, and useful, especially around the lesser-known “moods” feature, which blends light and sound to help guests focus or relax.
As Product Designer, I worked across UX, UI, and research. I led the design improvements for the in-room interface, conducted user testing, and facilitated workshops with stakeholders to align on vision and priorities.

"He has a proactive approach, collaborative mindset, and positive attitude, which make him a pleasure to work with. Not only within our UX team, but he also created great relationships with the product owners and external development teams he worked with."
Zoe Broughton
Sr. Product Designer, citizenM hotels

A key challenge was redesigning the “moods” feature — a set of ambient presets inspired by brainwave activity, intended to help guests shift their mental state. In-context user feedback showed that while the idea was compelling, the execution created confusion. Guests didn’t understand what the moods were, when to use them, or how to turn them off.
I addressed this by clarifying language, adding an explainer screen (“What is this?”), and redesigning the interactions using familiar media controls like play and stop. These changes helped make the feature more discoverable, understandable, and useful.

The updated experience gave guests more confidence and control, turning an abstract idea into something actionable and engaging. By improving clarity and usability, we made it easier for guests to make the room truly their own, reinforcing citizenM’s promise of smart luxury and tech-enabled comfort.
